If you are spending your holiday in Slovenia, looking for places to visit, here is an interesting walking trip for you: the amazing Lovrenc lakes on top of Pohorje massif.
Pohorje is a densely wooded mountain range in Northern Slovenia. It measures about 50 km from East to West and 30 km from East to West and it covers all together around 1000 km2. Its most important peak is Mount Rogla, situated at 1517 m above the thermal spa town Zreče. You can reach Rogla from Ljubljana in about one and a half hours. Known ski resort in winter, it is also a popular destination for walkers and mountain bikers in summer.
Lovrenc lakes
After parking your car at the main parking place at Rogla, you will follow the grass covered plain to Ostruščica and from there across the turf swamp to Mulejev vrh where the forest reserve begins. After crossing forests and pastures, you will finally reach Lovrenc lakes, a waste peat swamp with 11 to 22 lakes depending on rain and still water.
This natural phenomenon originates about 6000 years back, and during the times it changed from a mineral swamp into a high swamp with peat sizing deep to 290 cm. The most part of the peat swamp is covered with dwarf pines and typical flora for higher swamp (sturf moss, round-leaved sundew, marsh tea, moss rose and Alpine rust rose, a protected species). You can only walk around this area following the elevated wooden path.
This walk will take you about 1h30 one way and it is easy and suitable for small children as well.
