5 medals for Slovenia at the Olympics in Sochi

We have been following Winter Olympic Games in Sochi for just over a week and we can already be proud of 5 medals for Slovenia:
Tina Maze won gold in downhill skiing, 1st ever gold medal for Slovenia at the Winter Olympics,
Peter Prevc has won two medals in ski jumping, silver in normal hill and bronze in  large hill ski jumping,
Teja Gregorin won a bronze in biathlon, 10 km pursuit and
Vesna Fabjan won a bronze in cross country skiing, sprint free.

Following two silver medals in Vancouver and a superb season last year, when Tina won the overall WorldCup in women’s alpine skiing, Tina Maze fullfilled everybody’s expectations and won a gold in dowhill skiing, a discipline that Slovenes were never good at. She shared the best time of the race with Dominique Gisin, Swiss skier, which is also very unusual for a fast discipline such as downhill skiing. Tine came 5th in Super G and came 4th in super combined discipline where she missed a bronze for only 0,1 of a second. There is still Giant slalom and slalom in front of her this week, so good luck Tina!

After winning two silver medals at World Championships in 2009 and 2012, five times among top ten at the Winter Olympics, Teja Gregorin surprised all and won a bronze in Sochi. She was not the favourite, not even within the Slovene team, but she won Slovenia 1st ever biathlon Olympic medal.

Vesna Fabjan, not a very known athlete in Slovenia, won a bronze in cross country sprint event. After a bronze medal of Petra Majdič from Vancouver, this is a second Olympic medal in cross country skiing for Slovenia.

Peter Prevc, new Slovenian ski jumping star, has already won two medals for Slovenia in Sochi. A silver and a bronze medal followed Prevc’s excellent perfomances during the whole season. Peter is still waiting for his last jump in Sochi in team ski jumping competition together with Robert Kranjec, Jurij Tepeš and Jernej Damjan.
