Slovenia is full of surprises. After 15 years here, I keep discovering things that leave me speechless. Here are 10 genuinely unusual experiences I've tested—stuff you won't find anywhere else in Europe.

1. Kranj's Bitcoin Roundabout

Yes, you read that right. Kranj, the country's fourth-largest city, has the world's first roundabout dedicated to Bitcoin. A metal sculpture of the ₿ symbol sits at its centre. Slovenia is surprisingly crypto-friendly — Ljubljana has several Bitcoin ATMs and a very active community.

2. The Heart-Shaped Vineyard Road

In Špičnik, in the Štajerska wine region, a road winding through the vines traces a perfect heart when seen from above. It has become a national symbol, printed on tourist brochures. Access to the viewpoint costs €5, and you can taste the local wines in the surrounding cellars. Tip: come in autumn, when the vines turn red.

3. Single-Seat Chairlifts from the 1960s

In some Slovenian mountain resorts you can still find single-seat chairlifts dating from the 1960s-70s. No safety bar, just a metal seat and your feet dangling in the void. It's terrifying and poetic at the same time. A vintage experience that is slowly disappearing — enjoy it while it lasts.

4. The Second World War Trail Around Ljubljana

The Pot (“the path”) is a 32.5 km trail that loops right around Ljubljana. It follows the line of the barbed-wire fence the Italian and German occupiers built around the city in 1942. Today it's a wooded walk dotted with memorial stones. Allow 6-7 hours on foot, or 2 hours by bike.

5. The Spa in the Salt Marshes

Lepa Vida, near Piran, is an open-air spa set in the middle of the medieval Sečovlje salt pans. Saline mud baths, massages facing the marshes, all in absolute silence. It's one of the most unusual spas I know. Open from April to October, booking recommended.

6. Stand-Up Paddleboarding on the Ljubljanica

Paddling under Plečnik's bridges in the heart of Ljubljana means seeing the city from a completely different angle. Several operators offer guided sunset sessions. The river is calm and the experience beginner-friendly. In summer you'll pass ducks, swans and a few locals in kayaks.

7. The Intermittent Lake of Cerknica

Lake Cerknica is Slovenia's largest lake — when it exists. This karst lake fills and empties with the seasons, swallowed by underground sinkholes. In winter it's a huge lake. In summer it's a meadow where cows graze. A geological phenomenon unique in Europe that has fascinated scientists for centuries.

8. Wine Tasting in a Second World War Tunnel

In Kranj, the underground tunnels dug during the war have been converted into a wine cellar. Every November a wine festival is held there — 200 metres of galleries lined with local winemakers' stands. The acoustics are incredible, the atmosphere unique. Outside the festival, the tunnels can be visited all year round (guided tour €4).

9. The Car-Carrying Train

The Slovenian motorail carries your car through the mountain in 42 minutes while you sit comfortably in the carriage. It's the only service of its kind still running in Central Europe. The journey goes through the tunnel under the Karavanke and offers a spectacular shortcut between the Soča Valley and the rest of the country.

10. The Abandoned Plane in the Forest

Near the village of Otok, a Second World War Dakota C-47 has been resting in a clearing since 1944. The wreck is reached by a 20-minute forest trail. No sign, no ticket office — just a plane in the forest, overgrown with vegetation. It's one of those secret places Slovenians pass on by word of mouth.
