Ljubljana
How many days do you need in Ljubljana?
2 to 3 days are enough for the highlights: the old town, the castle, the Ljubljanica riverbanks, the central market and Tivoli Park. Add an extra day for Metelkova and the museums.
How to get around Ljubljana?
The city center is entirely pedestrian. For longer distances, use the LPP bus network (€1.30 per ride with an Urbana card) or the BicikeLJ bike-sharing system (free for the first hour). Taxis are rarely needed.
When is the best time to visit Ljubljana?
May to September for outdoor terraces and open-air markets. December is magical with the Christmas market. Winter (January-February) is quiet but cold (-2 to 5°C). Avoid November, often grey and rainy.
Is Ljubljana expensive?
Less than Paris or Vienna. Expect €10-15 for a restaurant meal, €2-3 for coffee, €50-100 for a decent hotel. The value for money is excellent, especially in traditional gostilnas.
Lake Bled
Can you swim in Lake Bled?
Yes! The water reaches 22-24°C in summer (July-August). The best beaches are at Grajsko kopališče (paid, with sun loungers) and on the west side (free). Swimming is allowed everywhere.
How to get to Bled Island?
By pletna, the traditional rowing boat (€15 return, 30 min on the island). You can also go by SUP, kayak, or swim (500m from the nearest shore).
How long to walk around the lake?
The full loop is 6 km: about 1h30 on foot, 30 min by bike. It's flat and accessible to all. The route offers stunning views, especially from the north shore with the castle in the background.
What is kremšnita?
Bled's signature dessert: a pastry with puff pastry, vanilla cream and custard. The best is at the Park Hotel, on the terrace facing the lake (€4.50).
Piran
How to get to Piran?
By car from Ljubljana: 1h20 via the A1 motorway. Note: the center is pedestrian — park at Fornače car park (free shuttle). By bus: regular services from Ljubljana (2h30) and Koper (30 min).
Are there beaches in Piran?
No sandy beaches, but rocky and concrete platforms for swimming. The most popular is Fiesa, a small cove 10 min walk away. For sand, go to Portorož (2 km).
What to do in Piran in one day?
Climb the ramparts for panoramic views, visit Tartini Square, wander the alleys, have a seafood lunch at the harbour. If time allows, visit the Sečovlje salt pans (15 min drive).
Triglav National Park
Do you need a guide to climb Triglav?
Highly recommended for non-mountaineers. The classic ascent (2 days) involves cable-equipped passages (via ferrata). A guide costs €200-300 per person. Experienced hikers can go solo.
When can you climb Triglav?
Mid-June to end of September. August is peak season. September offers a good balance: stable weather, fewer crowds. Mountain huts are open June to October.
What easy hikes are there in the park?
The Triglav Lakes Valley (Dolina Triglavskih Jezer) is stunning and accessible. Mostnica Gorge from Bohinj (1h each way). The Lake Bohinj loop (12 km, flat). Savica Waterfall (30 min walk).
Soča Valley
Is the Soča water really emerald green?
Yes, the colour comes from the limestone and dolomite rock of the riverbed. It's even more spectacular in person than in photos. Best spots: Tolmin Gorges, the Great Soča Canyon near Bovec, and the source (Izvir Soče).
How much does rafting on the Soča cost?
€35-50 per person for a 2-3 hour trip. Agencies in Bovec also offer kayaking (€40-60), canyoning (€50-80) and hydrospeed (€45-55). Book the day before in summer.
Can you swim in the Soča?
Yes, but the water is cold (8-12°C even in summer). Popular spots: Nadiža (warmer tributary), Soča near Trnovo, and the confluence with the Tolminka at Tolmin.
Postojna
How long is the Postojna Cave tour?
About 1h30: 10 min underground train ride in, 1h guided walking tour, 10 min train back. Temperature is 10°C year-round — bring a jacket.
Can you visit Postojna and Predjama in one day?
Yes, that's ideal. The cave in the morning (book the 10am slot), Predjama Castle in the afternoon (10 km away). Allow half a day total. A combined ticket is available (~€40 adult).
What is the olm (proteus)?
The olm (Proteus anguinus) is a unique amphibian endemic to karst caves. Called 'baby dragon' by Slovenians, it's blind, pale pink and can live 100 years. You can see them in the cave.
Kranjska Gora
Is skiing affordable in Kranjska Gora?
Yes, much cheaper than France or Switzerland. Day pass: ~€35 adult. Equipment rental: ~€20/day. The resort is small (18 km) but perfect for families and intermediates.
What to do in Kranjska Gora in summer?
Hiking (trail to Lake Jasna, Vršič Pass), mountain biking, zip-lining, summer toboggan, via ferrata. It's also the starting point for climbs in Triglav National Park.
Maribor
Why visit Maribor?

When to visit Maribor?
