Kranjska Gora, in the heart of the Julian Alps, is one of Slovenia's finest cycling playgrounds: more than 200 km of marked cycle trails, a bike park, mountain single-tracks through the forest and legendary mountain passes. Whether you ride with the family on flat, safe paths or set your sights on the 24 hairpins of the Vršič Pass, the resort has something for every cyclist. Here is our top 5 cycling routes around Kranjska Gora, rounded off with the bike park and the best places to rent a bike.
Why cycle in Kranjska Gora?
Kranjska Gora is a cycling destination for all types of riders, from families to adrenaline enthusiasts. You can explore the Upper Sava valley on a bike in a faster and more varied way than on foot: pedal lazily through the meadows, or take more challenging trips into the heart of the Alpine valleys.
Well-maintained cycle trails lead through beautiful Alpine valleys, to lakes and cross-border passes. The cycling infrastructure, the natural scenery and the wide range of services make the region the perfect place for an active mountain adventure. On the mountain biking side, the single-track trails offer the ultimate experience for trail riders: the best known, Kinder Surprise and Trail 1994, wind through the forests and combine technical challenges, sharp turns and unspoilt nature.
The top 5 cycling routes
Five routes, from the most accessible to the most demanding, that sum up the cycling riches of Kranjska Gora. All of them, except the D2, start from the Tourist Information Centre Kranjska Gora.
1. Cycling trail to the Fusine Lakes
- Start: Tourist Information Centre Kranjska Gora
- Difficulty: moderate
- Distance: 11.5 km
From Kranjska Gora, we head west along the cycling path toward Rateče and on to the border crossing with Italy. Just under two kilometres later, a sign points us toward the Fusine Lakes (Laghi di Fusine). Our route winds through the forest to the village of Scicchizza, where we join the main asphalt road leading toward the lakes. A fairly steep kilometre-long climb gets us up to the first lake and, after catching our breath, we push on to the second Fusine Lake. From here, we can continue straight past the Zacchi Refuge.
2. Cycling trail to Srednji Vrh
- Start: Tourist Information Centre Kranjska Gora
- Difficulty: moderate
- Distance: 8.6 km
Above Gozd Martuljek, perched on the forested slopes of the Karawanks, lies a grassy plateau dotted with the scattered homesteads of Srednji Vrh. This ledge, carved by ancient glaciers, serves up some of the most breathtaking views of the Martuljek and Špik mountain group. We start in Kranjska Gora, jumping onto the bike route toward Gozd Martuljek, then grind up a narrow ribbon of asphalt toward Srednji Vrh. The hairpin bends are challenging — a near-vertical wall — while from deep below we catch the sound of the Jerman stream's waterfalls. After conquering the climb, we're rewarded with panoramic views of the Martuljek peaks. Pick a clear, sunny day for this ride.
3. Long-distance cycling trail D2
- Start: Rateče
- Difficulty: moderate
- Distance: 28 km
One of the most beautiful biking trails takes you from Rateče through Kranjska Gora, past Gozd Martuljek and Mojstrana to Jesenice. Around 28 kilometres long, this trail in the foothills of the Julian Alps partly runs along an abandoned railway line, crosses numerous bridges and is almost entirely separated from traffic, surrounded by magnificent alpine scenery. Without major ascents, and with inns and well-appointed rest places, it is also suitable for children.
The upper part of the route takes you past the Zelenci Nature Reserve (the source of the Sava), the World Cup ski slope in Podkoren and the ski slopes in Kranjska Gora. Further up the valley, the trail winds between the green-wooded Karawanks and, on the other side, the rocky heights of the Julian Alps. A beautiful view of the Špik Mountain Group appears shortly after we leave Kranjska Gora.
4. Cycling trail to the Vršič Pass
- Start: Tourist Information Centre Kranjska Gora
- Difficulty: difficult
- Distance: 12.2 km
The Vršič Pass is our most famous mountain pass and has become the gold standard of cycling ascents in Slovenia. This is not strictly a mountain biking tour: the entire ascent takes place on a paved road open to motor vehicles, so caution is advised in traffic. From Kranjska Gora, the road leads past the Hotel Kranjska Gora, past Lake Jasna, and then over a bridge over the Pišnica River where the route branches off into the Krnica Valley. The road starts to climb and the turns become increasingly frequent and steep: 24 hairpin bends to the top, and any successful ride to the summit is an achievement to be proud of. Even if we're not racing the clock, the trip is well worth the effort. Only 80 vertical metres separate the last car park from the very top — and even if you can't get there by bike, a short hike rewards you with incredible views. We return via the same route.
Good to know: a new traffic regime applies to the Vršič Pass from summer 2026 (free shuttle, no more parking at the summit). Riding through by bike remains free and unrestricted — and on the far side of the pass you reach the Soča Valley.
5. Cycling trail to the Planica Valley and Tamar
- Start: Tourist Information Centre Kranjska Gora
- Difficulty: difficult
- Distance: 10.9 km
Riding on the beautiful, paved cycling trail, we head west from Kranjska Gora to the road where we turn left into the valley below Mount Ponca. Before long, we catch sight of the internationally famous Planica ski jumps, including the world's biggest ski-flying hill, which enables jumps of up to 250 metres. The road, gravel in some sections, takes us through the forest to a green meadow at the foot of the rock walls and to the very edge of Triglav National Park. Planica is one of the most beautiful valleys in Slovenia, and the Tamar Mountain Lodge at the end of our route offers a pleasant place to rest. From here, the only way onwards is on foot. On the descent, watch out for the sandy and, in places, gravelly surface that might cause a fall.
The Kranjska Gora Bike Park
The Kranjska Gora Bike Park is a wonderful playground for anyone keen to test their downhill skills. The four-seater Vitranc 1 chairlift carries cyclists and their bikes up to the trailhead, from which the trails descend more than 300 vertical metres back into the valley. At the base of the bike park there's a “kids skills park” with a 50-metre uphill track for the youngest riders.
- Family Business (family trail): the easiest trail in the bike park, perfect for beginners and families. Riders learn basic techniques through open sections and forested areas.
- Morning Wood (northshore trail): classic northshore riding over mostly wooden features — bridges, drops and jumps for maximum riding enjoyment.
- Funky Jazz (enduro trail): a “mini downhill course”, slightly more confined and slower than a true downhill run, ideal for all-mountain riders and a full day of descending fun.
- Luft Waffe(l) (jump line): a line of “table top” jumps connected with berms, a safe way to learn jumping techniques and link them at fairly high speed.
- DH Veetranz (downhill trail): the classic downhill trail, which has hosted numerous competitions. For seasoned riders: technical, steep forest sections interspersed with roots.
- Two Brothers (connector trail): a connector trail in the middle of the bike park, guiding riders to the right (blue line) and to the left (red line) around the famous rock.

Practical tips for cycling in the Julian Alps
- Pick your level: the Fusine, Srednji Vrh and D2 routes suit families and casual riders; Vršič and Planica/Tamar require some training.
- An e-bike changes everything: for the “difficult” routes, an e-bike makes the climbs accessible to almost anyone.
- Start early: better light on the peaks and quieter roads, especially on the Vršič.
- Mind the weather: aim for a clear day to enjoy the alpine panoramas, and beware of gravel descents after rain.
- Respect the national park: on routes that border or enter Triglav National Park (Planica, Vršič), stay on the authorised paths.
