Kranjska Gora

Upper Carniola

An alpine resort at the foot of Vršič Pass, at the tri-border junction of Slovenia, Italy and Austria. Skiing in winter (World Cup slalom), hiking and mountain biking in summer. Ideal base for exploring Triglav National Park.

Alpine resort at Triglav's doorstep

Kranjska Gora is Slovenia's main mountain resort, nestled at 810m altitude in the Upper Sava Valley at the junction of three countries (Slovenia, Italy, Austria). The town is best known for hosting World Cup alpine skiing events on the Podkoren slope—a major sporting event each March.

Winter activities

The ski area is modest (18km of slopes) but perfect for families and beginners. Daily lift pass: roughly €35 adults. For advanced skiers, Kanin (1 hour away, above Bovec) offers more challenging terrain up to 2,300m. Cross-country skiing at Planica (home to world ski jumping championships) and snowshoeing in the Zelenci nature reserve are excellent alternatives.

Summer activities

Summer transforms Kranjska Gora into a hiker's and mountain biker's paradise. The Zelenci nature reserve features a lake of crystalline emerald water fed by underground springs—accessible via a boardwalk (15-minute walk, free). The Vršič Pass (1,611m) starts here with its legendary 50 hairpin turns toward the Soča Valley. The Alpe-Adria-Trail passes through Kranjska Gora.

Planica, ski jumping temple

The Planica Nordic centre, 3km from town, is legendary in ski jumping history. This is where the first jump over 100 metres was achieved in 1936. The modern jump allows even tourists to try a summer simulator. The World Cup final each March draws 20,000 spectators in a festival atmosphere.

Practical information

Kranjska Gora is 1 hour 15 minutes from Ljubljana and 40 minutes from Bled. The compact village is fully pedestrian. Accommodation: from €25 in a guest house to €120 in a 4-star hotel. Restaurants: try štruklji (filled pastry rolls) in local gostilne. The Italian border (Tarvisio) is 10km away—convenient for day-trip shopping.
