Lake Bled

Upper Carniola

Slovenia's iconic alpine lake, nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps. Famous for the island with the Church of the Assumption and a medieval castle perched 130 metres above the water.

Why is Lake Bled so famous?

Lake Bled is Slovenia's postcard image: a turquoise glacial lake 2.1km long, an island with a church in the middle, a castle perched on a 130-metre cliff, and the Julian Alps as a backdrop. It's the country's most visited destination, attracting over 2 million visitors annually.

What to do at Bled?

The pletna, a traditional wooden boat, is the only way to reach the island—expect €15 return. Once there, ring the church bell to make a wish (local tradition). The 6km walk around the lake takes roughly 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. The castle (€13 entry) offers the finest views and houses a museum plus a working medieval printing press.

Vintgar Gorge, 4km north, is a spectacular 1.6km canyon with wooden walkways suspended above the Radovna River. Open April to November, entry €10. For the more active, Ojstrica (611m) is a short 30-minute hike rewarded with exceptional panoramic views of the entire lake.

Kremšnita: the signature dessert

No visit to Bled is complete without tasting kremšnita, a vanilla cream mille-feuille created at Park Hotel in 1953. Over 500,000 slices are served annually. Park Hotel remains the authentic destination (around €5 per slice).

Bled or Bohinj?

Lake Bohinj, 30 minutes away, is Slovenia's largest natural lake. Far less touristy, it offers a wilder experience with free swimming, kayaking, and direct access to Triglav National Park. My advice: do both. Bled for the postcard moment and kremšnita, Bohinj for nature and tranquility.

Practical information

Bled is 55km from Ljubljana (1 hour by car, 1 hour 15 minutes by bus for €6.30). Lakeside parking costs €3-5 per hour in summer—arrive early or use the free P3 car park (10-minute walk). Best season: June to September, though May and October are lovely with fewer crowds. Accommodation ranges from €30 in a hostel to €200 in a lake-view hotel.
