Why visit Ljubljana?
Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest capitals, and that's precisely what makes it charming. Named European Green Capital in 2016 by the European Commission, the city closed its historic centre to traffic, creating an exceptional pedestrian zone along the Ljubljanica. With 280,000 residents, everything is accessible on foot or by bike thanks to the BicikeLJ system (free for the first hour).
What to see in Ljubljana?
Ljubljana Castle dominates the city from a hilltop accessible on foot (20 minutes) or by funicular (€4 return). The 360° views across the Julian Alps and the city below are worth the journey. At the base, the iconic Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and Plečnik's Central Market are must-sees. Saturday mornings come alive with local producers selling fresh produce and regional specialities.
Don't miss Metelkova, a former Yugoslav military barracks transformed into an alternative artistic quarter—Ljubljana's answer to Copenhagen's Christiania. For architecture enthusiasts, the National Library (NUK) designed by Jože Plečnik is an Art Deco masterpiece.
Where to eat in Ljubljana?
For budget travellers, daily lunch menus (dnevno kosilo) served between noon and 2pm in traditional gostilne cost €8-12 for a complete meal. Gostilna na Gradu, nestled in the castle, serves authentic Slovenian cuisine. Every Friday from March to October, Open Kitchen (Odprta Kuhna) on Pogačar Square brings together the country's finest food trucks—an unmissable gathering.
Getting around
The city centre is completely pedestrian. For longer journeys, the urban bus costs €1.30 with a refillable Urbana card (available at kiosks). Jože Pučnik airport sits 25km north—the GoOpti shuttle or bus costs around €10. Ljubljana makes an excellent base for exploring the country: Bled is 1 hour away, Postojna 45 minutes, and Piran 1.5 hours.
Best time to visit
May through September for riverside terraces and summer festivals (Ljubljana Festival, Ana Desetnica). December is magical with the Christmas market illuminating the entire centre. Avoid January-February unless you enjoy cold weather (temperatures around freezing).
