Maribor

Lower Styria

Slovenia's second city, in the heart of the Styrian wine region. Known for the world's oldest vine (over 400 years old), the historic Lent quarter on the Drava River, and proximity to Pohorje for skiing and hiking.

Slovenia's second city

Maribor (115,000 residents) is often overlooked by tourists in favour of Ljubljana—unfairly. Named European Capital of Culture in 2012, this university city on the Drava River has authentic character, exceptional wine culture, and the Pohorje massif ideal for hiking and skiing. It's the gateway to Slovenian Styria, the prime wine region.

The world's oldest vine

Maribor is home to the Stara trta, the world's oldest vine still in production, certified by Guinness. Planted over 450 years ago, it still yields 35-55kg of Žametovka grapes annually. The Old Vine House (Hiša Stare Trte) on the Drava riverside offers tastings and a wine museum. Free entry; tastings from €10.

Styrian wine route

Vineyards blanket the hills surrounding Maribor. The Maribor wine route (Mariborska vinska cesta) winds through estates where you can taste aromatic whites—Šipon (Furmint), Laški Rizling, and Sauvignon. Osmice (pop-up wine taverns open a few weeks yearly) and zidanice (vineyard houses) serve local wine paired with charcuterie and cheese.

What to see in town

The Lent quarter along the Drava is the historic heart—stroll the quays, visit the water tower and judgment tower. Maribor Cathedral (12th century) and Maribor Castle (regional museum) are worth visiting. In June, the Lent Festival transforms the riverbanks into a cultural stage for two weeks—Slovenia's biggest outdoor festival.

Pohorje

The Pohorje massif (1,543m) is accessible directly from town by cable car. Winter: 42km of ski slopes (daily pass ~€30), World Cup women's skiing (Zlata Lisica) every January. Summer: hiking, mountain biking, and the Šumik waterfalls—a magical forest location. The 2-3 day Pohorje circuit is one of Slovenia's finest treks.

Practical information

Maribor is 1.5 hours from Ljubljana by motorway and 1 hour from Graz (Austria). Direct train from Ljubljana (2 hours, ~€12). The centre is compact and walkable. Restaurant Mak serves Slovenia's finest cuisine. Accommodation: from €30 in a hostel to €100 in a boutique hotel. Maribor is also an excellent base for visiting Ptuj, Slovenia's oldest city (30 minutes away).
