Open Kitchen Ljubljana: The Friday Food Market You Shouldn't Miss
The central market turns into an open-air cooking festival, March to October.
Every sunny Friday from March to the end of October, 10 AM to 10 PM, Ljubljana's central market (Pogačarjev trg) turns into a giant open-air cooking festival: Open Kitchen (Odprta Kuhna). Dozens of restaurants and chefs cook dishes from all over the world, live. For over a decade it's been the favourite food ritual of locals and travellers alike.
Information verified in May 2026.
Cooking, out in the open
Open Kitchen is the simplest, most joyful idea: gather Ljubljana's best kitchens (and guests from further afield) on one square, one day a week, and let them cook in front of you. No fixed menu, no booking — you wander from stall to stall, taste, compare, repeat. Expect traditional Slovenian food alongside Asian, Italian, Mexican and Balkan flavours; the line-up shifts week to week.
At e-slovenie, it's the first place we send any visitor landing in Ljubljana: in one afternoon you taste more Slovenian and international cooking than in a week of sit-down restaurants.
When to go
Every Friday, March to end of October, 10 AM to 10 PM. Arrive around noon for lunch, or late afternoon to enjoy the atmosphere into the evening.
⚠️ It may be cancelled in rainy weather — check their social media that morning.
Where it happens
On Pogačarjev trg, in the heart of Ljubljana's central market, right by the cathedral and the Dragon Bridge.
How to get there
- On foot: 5–10 min from Prešeren Square (pedestrian centre).
- By bike: BicikeLJ stations nearby.
- By bus: stops Krekov trg, Zmajski most, Pošta.
How it works on site
No reservations — grab a spot at the market's tables, benches or steps. Order at the stall, pay, take your plate. Plan to taste several small portions rather than one big dish — that's the whole point. Bring some cash too: it's the quickest way to hop from stall to stall.

Patrick's note
Open Kitchen is one of our must-visit Ljubljana spots — we go back every season. Best move: do a full lap first before ordering, spot the stalls with the steaming pans and the longest local queues, then follow your gut. And save room for a Slovenian dessert at the end.
